Winter is definitely here! Our first week of winter was super wet, flooding, cold, wet and icky. The change of season to cooler temperatures can wreak havoc on our skin, causing it to become dull, itchy, flaky, and dry.

The main reasons for these changes in our skin are the fluctuations in humidity and temperature, reduced water intake during the cooler weather, changes in clothing and covering habits, and constant exposure to heating sources, further drying out our skin.

Our top winter skincare tips are:

1. Drink water – We know it’s cold, and there’s not much better than a mug of hot choccy, robe and heater on, but your body and skin need some clear stuff. Aim for 8 cups a day.

2. Sun Protection – Yeah, there isn’t much sun. I’m 100% with you! The UV index in Perth still reaches high levels in the winter. Daily sun protection is the ultimate defense in anti-aging and preventing nasties like skin cancers.

3. Hydration is key – Someone get it a drink stat!! Not only are we replenishing fluid loss from within, but our skin also needs something to keep it hydrated. Using a Hyaluronic Acid Serum like the Medik8 Hydr8 B5 ($90) as your first serum can help with hydration, and a nice rich moisturizer (my fave daytime is the Medik8 Daily Radiance Vitamin C cream ($118) or Medik8 Advanced Night Restore ($138) for the night) will keep all that hydration locked in.

4. Don’t panic – Put the exfoliating mitts down!!! You will over-dry your skin even more! Contrary to the wet and wild weather, your skin is dry and needs some love. Once a week, give your skin a gentle exfoliation (Medik8’s Pore Refining Scrub ($66) is a nice addition to your skincare repertoire) and use a milder cleanser if your skin is feeling a little on the drier side (Medik8’s Lipid Balance Cleanse ($62) and Cream Cleanse ($51) leave your skin feeling fresh and soothed).

5. Avoid super hot showers – I can’t tell you how much the scalding heat of hell that is my shower literally soothes my soul, but minimize the time in the extreme heat – it might warm your insides, but it is not doing your skin any favours.

6. Treat your skin to beauty and dermal treatments while the sun isn’t as spicy. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels can gently exfoliate the skin and allow for a rejuvenated winter glow. Intense pulse light can reduce pigmentation and redness and reduce hair in unwanted areas. It is the perfect time for deep depigmentation peels – with a little downtime, these peels can be used to reduce the appearance of melasma and pigmentation on most skin types.

I love winter for the warm nights cuddled up on the couch, impromptu road trips down South, red wine, and fire. I do love the wet weather, the shades of green against a dark grey sky; however, winter skin can be super irritating.

Our fabulous team is happy to guide you through your skin concerns and help you and your skin feel fresh and rejuvenated this winter. Keep an eye out for our treatment highlights for skincare treatments during the winter months.
